Ultra Running training retreat in Big Bear Lake, CA for everyone. Whether you are new to the ultra running world or a seasoned vet our “camp” format is ready adaptable and rewarding. This is a full weekend of running in the mountains! Make new friends, tackle new trails, and push yourself to grow as an ultra runner. No ultra running experience needed, just grab your shoes!

Our goal is to have between 10 - 15 runners per retreat.
Standard lodging packages include 2 Nights in shared accommodations. Individual and Couples lodging options available upon request. Luxury and Group lodging packages available.

Elevate Ultra Running Retreats are not coached. These are opportunities to run in a supported group environment where you can share and learn from other ultra runners. We have a host of experienced runners who will lead runs and take part in other aspects of the camp. 

Retreat runs are formatted as out and backs with a suggested turn around time. No matter your pace or fitness level you’ll be able to push yourself on runs, receive real time support, and make the most out of a weekend in the mountains. 

We originally called it a camp, but you will be staying in a lodge in The Village, eating at local restaurants, and taking in much more that Big Bear has to offer, so retreat sounded a bit more accurate.

It’s a vacation, with lots of running!

Located at an elevation of 7,000’ our alpine environment is perfect for pushing a weekend of training at the highest levels.

FRIDAY

Athlete Check-In - Meet the crew and other campers, get your camp kit.
5 Mile Shakeout Run - Run from the village
Athlete Dinner -  Village restaurant, family style
Planning Clinic - How to prepare for a race? 


SATURDAY

20 Mile Run - Tackle the mighty Sugarloaf Mountain.
Breakfast - Buffet waiting at run finish
Gear Clinic - Must have gear and how to use it?
Lunch - Food to go, rest/break time!
10 Mile Run - Sunset run on the North Shore
Dinner - Village restaurant, family style
Guest Presentation - TBD, guaranteed to be cool!


SUNDAY

15 Mile Run - The classic South Shore loop
Breakfast - Possibly with mimosa’s? : )
Recovery Clinic w/Massage - Tip, Tactics, and rewards.

RETREAT HOST

Matt Smith has been running in the mountains around Big Bear for 20+ years and is excited to share his love and knowledge of the area with you. An experienced ultra runner, Matt has stood on the podium of some of the hardest races in the world and has a passion for sharing the lessons he’s learned along the way. Co-Founder and former RD for the Kodiak Ultra Marathons and current race director, Matt has a background in hospitality and event production.  

“I remember standing on the start line of my first ultra marathon having no idea what I was doing. I went out too hard and died 10 miles before the finish. It was a long walk from that point. There is no substitute for putting in the work to get yourself in shape but there are definitely some short cuts along the way. I’m excited to share what I have learned in ultra running and this place I’ve called home in Big Bear for the last 20 years!”

Guests will join our runs and share their stories, knowledge, and advice on many areas of ultra running and training. Some may be elite runners, others local athletes with interesting experience. Our goal is to make each retreat unique and beneficial in a variety of ways.
